It was a big California Democratic Party (CADEM) Convention weekend for Asian Democrats! On Friday night, we co-hosted a Welcome Reception with 12 partner organizations (Black Los Angeles Young Democrats, California Young Democrats, Los Angeles County Young Democrats, San Fernando Valley Young Democrats, San Gabriel Valley Young Democrats, Stonewall Young Democrats, Westside Young Democrats), and a diverse coalition of Asian Pacific Islander groups (CADEM Asian Pacific Islander Caucus, California Young Democrats Asian Pacific Islander, Korean American Democratic Committee, Pilipino American Los Angeles Democrats, South Asians for America). The event was attended by over 310 people!
ADLAC was proud to co-lead the planning for this event, securing speakers like Assemblymembers Alex Lee and Ash Kalra, API Caucus Chair Deepa Sharma and PALAD Past President Jessica Caloza. (We're grateful to have also been joined by speakers Attorney General Rob Bonta, Assemblymembers Mike Fong and Phil Ting, Pasadena City College Trustee Alton Wang, Los Angeles County Democratic Party Chair Mark Gonzalez, Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascon, and the event MC, Former California Young Democrats President Diane Le, along with guests in attendance like Assemblymembers Isaac Bryan and Mia Bonta, and many other elected officials!) ADLAC Advisory Board Members Deepa Sharma and Steve Kang were re-elected to the CADEM AAPI Caucus, as was ADLAC President Dr. Andrew Murphy. At the Caucus meeting, ADLAC Advisory Board Member Tony Hoang and Equality California were given the 2023 Organizational Excellence Award! The API Caucus was also introduced on the CADEM main stage for an AANHPI Heritage Month celebration, and ADLAC Board Member Jennifer Kumiyama performed! ADLAC Treasurer Hoang Nguyen was elected CYD API Caucus Chair, and Advisory Board Member Faith Lee was re-elected to the Board. ADLAC Board Members were proud to attend gatherings with the Iranian American Democratic Committee, South Asians for America, and the California Democratic Party Filipino American Caucus. None of this work or these accomplishments could have been achieved without solidarity, partnership, and investment in relationship-building both inside and outside of AANHPI communities. Join the Korean American Democratic Committee, the Pilipino American Los Angeles Democrats, the Southern California Armenian Democrats and the Asian Democrats of Los Angeles County for a big-time summer event!
We're bringing back and expanding the long-time Armenian vs Korean Democratic BBQ Battle, this time with four groups vying for the championship! Come enjoy free food (with RSVP), music, and camaraderie! Community partners - want to join us? All community organizations serving API and Armenian communities are welcome to promote their activities at our BBQ event (tables will not be provided; please bring a table and your materials). On Friday, March 24th at our first Spring Mixer, thanks to your support we far surpassed our attendance and fundraising goals!
Thank you to the 131 individuals who joined and helped us raise $6,550. These funds will go directly towards our work to elevate issues important to Asian communities, provide direct support to community members in need, and to uplift candidates who have and will fight for us. Your support means the world! In the meantime, we look forward to seeing you at our next event, a community engagement event this summer! Soft Launch FundraiserIn partnership with Assemblymember Mike Fong, we held a 50/50 fundraiser in September that drew 51 attendees, 31 sponsors, and a total of over $3,000 to support both ADLAC and Assemblymember Fong's re-election campaign. API Town Hall With LA Sheriff CandidatesWe hosted a LA County Sheriff candidate town hall with Asian Americans Advancing Justice Southern California, Korean American Democratic Committee, and the Korean American Federation of Los Angeles. Over 160 community members attended in-person or via live stream. Combating Anti-Asian Campaign RhetoricADLAC joined 16 other community organizations in releasing a statement and holding a press conference calling on candidates to not use APIs as scapegoats or wedge minorities in campaign ads. Democratic SolidarityADLAC joined the Korean American Democratic Committee and Pilipino American Los Angeles Democrats in calling for accountability and redistricting reform in the wake of the LA City Councilmember recording scandal. Candidate EndorsmentsADLAC endorsed 30 candidates, including Mayor-elect Karen Bass. Candidate SupportADLAC Board members supported our candidates via monetary donation, canvassing, phonebanking, attending press conferences, press releases, public events, and much, much more.
At a time when communities of color, including Black, Latine, Indigenous, LGBTQ+ and Asian Pacific Islander (API) communities are under attack, the Korean American Democratic Committee (KADC), the Asian Democrats of Los Angeles County (ADLAC), and the Pilipino American Los Angeles Democrats (PALAD) affirm there is no excuse for the hate speech used by elected City Council leaders in recently revealed audio recordings. Racism, anti-Blackness, Indigenous erasure, and homophobia must be uprooted from all levels of government. Furthermore, we strongly condemn attacks specifically targeting Asian communities and Asian community leaders.
Co-hosted by Asian Americans Advancing Justice Southern California (AJSOCAL), the Asian Democrats of Los Angeles County (ADLAC), and the Korean American Democratic Committee (KADC), this non-partisan community event will allow Asian Pacific Islander community members to learn about and ask questions of candidates for LA County Sheriff ahead of the November election. Specifically, the event organizers hope this event can allow for a nuanced discussion on the role of policing and combating anti-Asian hate within the purview of the County Sheriff's office.
As Asian Democrats of Los Angeles County gears up for the general election cycle, we need community members like you to ensure we're able to support our endorsed candidates, elevate our communities' priorities, and mobilize our communities this November — which is why we're inviting you to join us and Asm. Mike Fong for our September fundraiser! Your contributions will go towards supporting the Assemblymember and fueling our work uplifting Asian communities across the county!
